China’s First Coil of Non-Oriented Electrical Steel Produced via Hydrogen-Based Shaft Furnace-Electric Arc Furnace Route Rolled Off the Production Line

On August 11, over 20 representatives from ABB, Baoshan Iron & Steel Co., Ltd. (Baosteel) Zhanjiang Iron & Steel, Baosteel Marketing Center (Baosteel International), and the Silicon Steel Business Division gathered on the shore of the South China Sea to witness a landmark moment: the successful mass production and rollout of China’s first coil of non-oriented electrical steel made via the hydrogen-based shaft furnace-electric arc furnace (H2-SF-EAF) route—a “green steel” product—at Zhanjiang Iron & Steel. This milestone marks a major breakthrough in smelting technology for non-oriented electrical steel using the short-process H2-SF-EAF route, significantly enhancing Zhanjiang Iron & Steel’s technical strength and green competitiveness within the high-end manufacturing supply chain.

Non-oriented electrical steel is the “heart” of electric motors. ABB’s low-voltage motors division, a global leader in motors and drives, has established a long-term, stable partnership with Baosteel. The two parties are expected to extend this collaboration to Baosteel Zhanjiang’s low-carbon-emission non-oriented electrical steel products, achieving strategic synergy in the field of “full-life-cycle green smart manufacturing.” Together, they aim to help global manufacturers navigate green trade barriers and rebuild core competitiveness in the context of global carbon peaking and neutrality goals.

From the full commissioning of a near-zero-carbon production line to the rollout of China’s first H2-SF-EAF non-oriented electrical steel coil, Zhanjiang Iron & Steel has remained firmly aligned with its high-quality development strategy of “Three Innovations, Four Transformations, and Five Priorities.” Guided by green and low-carbon principles to lead industrial transformation, and through collaborative synergy to build a win-win ecosystem, this coil of green steel marks not just a starting point, but a driver propelling the steel industry toward a greener future.
