Steel Coil Price Divergence: US Highs, EU Stalls

A flat steel market that no longer moves as one

Global flat steel split into two speeds this week, and the gap is now wide enough to change how import buyers build a sourcing budget.

In the United States, Steel Market Update put the average hot rolled coil (HRC) price at $1,280 per short ton in the week to 15 October — up $10/st on the week and $40/st on the month — with the HR-to-prime-scrap spread widening for a thirteenth consecutive month (Steel Market Update, 15 October 2026). At the 12 October close, CME Group’s HRC futures priced the fourth quarter of 2026 at $1,295/st, $63/st above a month earlier, with the 2027 curve up $80/st to $1,207/st (Steel Market Update / CRU, 15 October 2026). The benchmark contract tracked by Trading Economics settled at $1,343/t on 16 October, up 64.99% year on year.

Europe barely moved. Fastmarkets assessed its daily northern European HRC index at €741.67/tonne ex-works on 12 October, unchanged from 9 October and down €3.33/t month on month (Fastmarkets via EUROMETAL, 13 October 2026).

The problem: US scarcity against an EU demand ceiling

American lead times tell the story better than price does. Steel Market Update’s October survey found average flat-rolled lead times stretching into mid- or late December, with some mills quoting into 2027, and plate lead times above their 2021 peak (Steel Market Update, 15 October 2026). The trigger was the loss of a reheating line at a large southern mill. Published US flat prices on 15 October averaged $1,510/st for cold rolled, $1,510/st for galvanized (GI) and $1,470/st for plate.

Europe is the mirror image: thin demand meeting regulated import access. Turkish HRC offers into the region firmed to roughly $630–645/mt FOB, from $620–630/mt a week earlier, and delivered Romanian levels were quoted at about $655–675/mt CFR (EUROMETAL / SteelOrbis, 15 October 2026). Asian coil is the flexible supply, but it is not running hot either: SteelOrbis’s 15 October indices showed HDG FOB China down 0.81% week on week and the China HRC export index down 0.79%.

The practical consequence is that a quotation from one origin no longer benchmarks another — and a coil booked in the wrong grade, or without complete mill documentation, can cost more than the headline steel coil price suggests.

What to buy, and against which specification

The way through a two-speed market is to buy against a fixed specification, so that a coil, a plate or a cut part can be moved between suppliers without re-engineering the end product.

Coil: HRC base, cold rolled and coated

Hot rolled coil (HRC) remains the feedstock for cold rolling, coating and tube-making. We commonly supply HRC in structural and forming grades — including SS400, Q235B and SAE1006-type chemistries — with thickness and width ranges subject to mill availability; the range we work to is set out on our hot rolled steel sheet and coil page.

Where tighter tolerances and formability are needed, cold rolled steel coil carries the requirement: white goods, switchgear enclosures and precision stamping. We quote cold rolled steel coil against the customer’s named grade and dimensional tolerance rather than a generic “CRC”.

For corrosion resistance, galvanized steel coil with a stated zinc coating weight serves steel doors and windows, steel furniture and refrigeration housings, while prepainted steel coil adds the colour system where the panel is the visible surface. Both sit in our galvanized product range, with detail on the galvanized steel coil page and the coating build-up on the prepainted galvanized steel page.

Plate and cut parts

Medium and heavy steel plate is where lead time matters most, since plate is the product class setting records in the US. For structural fabrication, energy equipment and heavy machinery, thickness, impact toughness and flatness decide whether a plate can be used at all. Our general and medium plate range covers structural and low-alloy grades, commonly supplied subject to mill availability.

Where the drawing calls for a finished profile, steel plate cutting parts remove a fabrication step: CNC cutting, bevelling and drilling to the customer’s drawing, including thick-section parts for energy equipment. See our steel plate cutting parts page and the cutting parts category.

Electrical steel

CRGO electrical steel is a different market, but the same logic holds: a transformer or motor core is designed around a defined grade, core loss and thickness, and substituting it later is expensive. We supply grain-oriented and non-oriented electrical steel through our electrical steel category and the CRGO grain-oriented electrical steel page.

How we read it as a supplier

First, documentation is now part of the specification. European importers must hold verifiable evidence of the country where steel was melted and poured — mandatory since 1 October 2026 under Regulation (EU) 2026/1384 (Crowell, 7 September 2026). A mill test certificate that traces the melt, not only the final processing step, is no longer optional, so we treat traceability as a fixed part of the offer.

Second, a spread is a planning problem, not a bargain. A 64.99% year-on-year move in the US benchmark against a flat European index is no reason to speculate; it is a reason to lock specification and volume where you actually produce, and to keep the other origin on file as a documented alternative.

Third, consolidating grades saves real money. Buyers who combine cold rolled, galvanized and plate requirements into one documented shipment avoid paying three times for freight, inspection and administration. We ship out of Chinese ports with mill-source certification covering major domestic mills, and will build a quotation around your drawings and grade list — see our full product list, our company profile, or contact us with the specification you work to.

Sourcing decisions on 15 October 2026 are not the same decisions as in July. If a quotation does not state grade, tolerance, coating weight and melt origin, it is not yet a comparable steel coil price.
